International human rights and solidarity groups will hold protests in several major cities, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of six Malaysian political prisoners - Chua Tian Chang, Hishamuddin Rais, Saari Sungib, Dr. Badrulamin Bahron, Lokman Adam and Mohd. Ezam Mohd. Nor.
These protests, to be held today, in Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia and London, come at the heels of the Malaysian National Human Rights Commission's calls to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA).
The International Secretariat of Amnesty International has called April 10th a 'Day of Solidarity with Prisoners of Conscience' in Malaysia. Other organizations have sent protest letters to Malaysian diplomatic missions around the world and to the acting Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Abdullah A. Badawi.
In Melbourne, Australia, the Australia-Asia Workers Links will rally at 5.00 pm (Melbourne time) outside the Malaysian Airlines Office on Collin Street.
In downtown Seoul, the Asia-Pacific Workers Solidarity Links - Korea will lead nine-labour organizations, including the largest trade union - Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, in a rally outside the Malaysian Airlines Office at 10 am (Seoul time).
In Hong Kong, protests will be held outside the Malaysian Consul-General's Office.
In London, a picket will held at 12.00 pm (London time) outside the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board in Trafalgar Square.
