Anti-eviction: Mfuleni update - 800 people to take councill

Between 500 and 800 people have gathered and are marching down Jackson
Street, Driftsands, Mfuleni, Cape Town.

The members of the poor community of Mfuleni are marching on the
councillor's house in the same street.

The furniture of the Ngeleza, Matau and Damane families was repossessed this morning in Mfuleni. All are either pensioners and unemployed.

The furniture was repossessed very early in the morning and supposedly done to offset water debts. Although a police source told the Anti-Eviction Campaign last night that three families would be evicted, the Councillor for the area, Trevor Tokwana, was nowhere to be found. Thus it was too late to verify which of the families were to be evicted or have their furniture repossessed until it was too late.

The community intends to take the councillor hostage until he arranges for the return of the furniture. The Anti-Eviction Campaign faces a common problem that the Unicity and Sheriff refuses to provide details of families to be evicted or have furniture repossessed to anyone other than the Councillors. Yet Councillors all over Cape Town fail to negotiate on behalf of their poor constituents or even inform the constituents that they will be evicted. It seems that Councillors think they are elected by the Sheriff and not by the poor of their areas.
