Hundred of thousands from all over Europe demonstrated last weekend in Florence, Italy against the planned war on Iraq.

This was the largest manifestation of opposition to a new Gulf War to date. It was also the highlight of the "European Social Forum Against War, Neo-Liberalism and Racism".

Police and trade unions in Florence estimated the number to be around 500,000, and the organizers announced a crowd of 1,000,000 participants. In either case, the number of protestors greatly exceeded all expectations. The organizers initial expectation was 200,000 people. They also underestimated their own powers of mobilization with the forum. Instead of the expected 30,000 people, around 60,000 participants from all over Europe took part in the
forum.

The demonstration last Saturday was charactericed by throngs of anti-war banners. Strong foreign groups came mainly from Greece and France, but there were also several thousands from Germany and Austria.

After the mass demonstration, organizers planned a "European Day Against the War on Iraq" for next February.
