NHRC Presumes to Protect MWs

-A Social Talk on Human Rights Policy Plan-

Source  :  Asian Workers News No. 130 (May 19, 2002)

By Lee Min-jun, Staff Reporter of Asian Workers News

The National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) held a social gathering to talk about the human rights policy planning with some civic groups related to migrant works.
The talk which started May 10, 3 p.m. finished at 5 or so.
As a matter of fact, the meeting was rather different from social talk. It was progressed in a way of first listening to the plans on human rights policy by NHRC and then civic groups made questions.
NHRC explained the present conditions such as the main function, Constitution, and budget of the organization. Then, it talked about the four concrete plans by problems awaiting solutions as follows,

1. Correcting and controling the violation of human rights and discriminative treatment

2. Building up the systematic infrastructure to improve and protect human rights

3. Reconsidering national awareness on human rights through education and public relations

4. Building up internal and external cooperation networks to promote human rights policy plan

Among four plans, the point that No.1 and 2 stress is to quick-receive information on violation of human rights like the case of Mr. Sirazul Islam and to make every effort to correct the ethnic discrimination.
Besides, the plans take concrete alternatives to problems happening on the spot such as embodiment of main types of discrimination, development of relief guiding principles, etc. These plans by NHRC create more positive conditions over human rights in Korea.
However, the more important point is that how faithfully the plans are advanced and how the people who perform the plans understand them and change their point of view. Without the previous fulfillment, expecting improved human rights conditions is impossible.
Considering this, NHRC should keep an eye on their plans not to be in vain. NHRC hopes to strengthen the connection with civic groups and hold more various meetings to talk like this.
On May 15, as a part of the movement, the social meeting for Chosunjoks human rights is to take place. In addition, NHRC is planning to run a 'Human Rights Library'. In order to make it provide more informative data, NHRC has promoted the project in many ways and has recently supplemented librarians.
In promoting the project, NHRC hopes to receive the periodic publication from each related organization so that many materials on existing state of human rights are collected and preserved.
