Why are we carrying out a hunger-strike?

Numerous Korean activists of social groups, who have been made every
endeavor for the democracy, reunification, and human rights, have been on a
hunger-strike since November 30 in front of . It is taking place at the
entrance of Myoungdong Catholic Cathedral, a which is famous site in the
Korean movement for democracy.for the Holy Land of democratization

Why are should we go on a hunger-strike in the shabby tents in this cold
winter?

The National Security Law in Korea is well- known throughout the
international community as the a law that tramplestrampling upon human
rightsover the international community. So the Therefore, international
human rights organizations, including the United Nations Human Rights
Commission and the Amnesty International, have strongly urged demanded the
Korean government that should to abolish or revise the law.

The hostile relationship between North and South Korea became to changed
into the one ofatmosphere of reconciliation after the Pyoungyang Summit
Talks this year. As a result, the National Security Law is losing its reason
to existreason to exist since because North Korea wasis considered the
primaryprescribed the anti-national organization by the National Security
Law. In accordance with this change, the government and the ruling party
have repeatedly made reference to revisingthe revision of the National
Security Law repeatedly. It is true that we, Korean NGOs pretty expected no
less fromthe attitude of the government.

But our expectation has beenis entirely deceived. We are certain can't sure
if the Parliament National Assembly will notwould deliberate the NSL within
this this year. So it is natural that a lot of Many NGOs and people in Korea
feel they have no choice but to stand against the New Millennium Democratic
Party, which is the ruling party in Korea, as well as the Grand National
Party, which has been opposed to revisinge the NSL.

Our hunger-strike is the expression of a protest against the irresponsible
attitude of the politicians and a the warning plea to the parties to the
Parties for abolishing the NSL. Clearly As you know, the a hunger-strike
is a very painful struggle. Nevertheless, Iit is just a part of the fight to
abolish struggle for the abolition of the NSL under the current political
situation in of Korea. We will struggle and never submit without regardless
of to the pain.
