Korean activists protest against the violent suppression of J21 demonstrations

On 25th July, 30 activists from the member organizations of the Korean People's Action Against Investment Treaties and WTO(KoPA) gathered together nearby the Italian Embassy in Seoul (unfortunately, the Korean law forbids any demonstrations within the diameter of 100m from the building of a foreign envoy) to protest against the Italian government for its murderous suppression against the demonstrators in Genoa this week, and to show defiance at the neo-liberal globalization that is sweeping through the world.

The demonstration started off with a speech from Mi-Kyeong Ryu, a KoPA representative who had participated in the meetings of the Jubilee South and then joined in the demonstrations in Genoa. She denounced the plans of the G8 heads of state who are imposing austere restructuring measures as conditions for the cancellation of Third World debt - plans which will further the poverty and subjugation of Third World countries -, and stated the necessity of solidarity against globalization between the peoples of the Third World. Ryu also reported on the J21 march and the situation surrounding the violent attack from the police resulting in the death
of an Italian demonstrator. Other speeches followed - on the sacrifice of human rights and democracy for the sake of accumulation of wealth, the ruthlessness of transnational pharmaceutical companies against the people of the third world suffering from AIDS and other 'diseases of poverty', and against the environmental threats imposed by free trade. The protesters also demanded that 'the Italian government should kneel down and sincerely apologize to the peoples of the world' for its atrocity at the Genoa demonstrations. The demonstration finished off with the reading out of the Letter of Protest addressed to the Italian Ambassador, and representatives were sent to the Embassy to deliver the letter.

Three activists met with the Italian Ambassador, Carlo Trezza, and told him that 'unconditional cancellation of illegal debt' and 'the establishment of funds for AIDS' are the demands of the people all over the world, to which the Ambassador merely said that they were 'problems that will take time'. On the issue of the deaths and injuries that occured during the J21 demonstrations, Mr. Trezza simply replied that the 'Italian government had already showed regret', implying that the government does not have any
intention to acknowledge responsibility and apologize for the murder of the Italian youth.
