Think Again: Anti-Corruption Law
Korea is the one of the cleanest countries in the world. Regrettably wrong. South Korea ranked 42nd out of 91 countries in the corruption perceptions index (CPI) announced by Transparency International, showing we still have a long way to go to battle the evil that exists in every corner of our society.

Regrettably wrong. South Korea ranked 42nd out of 91 countries in the corruption perceptions index (CPI) announced by Transparency International, showing we still have a long way to go to battle the evil that exists in every corner of our society.
There is the Anti-Corruption Law in Korea.
Simplistic. After six years since the legislation was proposed by PSPD to help prevent corruption, the National Assembly finally passed the Anti-Corruption Law to provide institutional devices to control unethical practices of politicians, government officials and businessmen. Under the new law, the government will set up the "Anti-Corruption Commission" to fight the deeply rooted practices in officialdom and the political world. In particular, the law stipulates that "whistleblowers'' who file corruption charges shall be protected.
However the newly passed law is far from the comprehensive law that PSPD has proposed. Generally, the so-called anti-corruption law contains a code of ethics while there is no code of ethics in the new law. The proposed introduction of the independent counsel or special prosecutor is rejected. The stipulations are needed to get tougher with acts of retaliation and to provide stronger measures to protect those who file complaints against the corrupt officials.
The National Assembly exerted itself for the Anti-Corruption Law.
Definitely No. The ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) promising the comprehensive law, the same as the one proposed by civic groups, did not pass the anti-corruption law that contains the introduction of special prosecutor and code of ethics. The main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) did not show the sincerity on anti-corruption issue. Civic groups had proposed 'Open vote and cross voting on the anti-corruption law,' but parties and chairmen rejected it. As a result, members could conceal irresponsibility. The members show the same attitude again on anti-money laundering act issue.
PSPD's Proposal
PSPD rushes into the amendment of the anti-corruption law to include special prosecutor system and code of ethic for government officials. PSPD will also strive to pass the anti-money laundering act. The institutional devices to protect corruption should be a preceding condition in our society. To eradicate the corruption, our monitoring and participating activities are continued.
