Six years ago, the president emphasized the need of internationalization
in all fields. In the '98 Kyoungju World Culture Expo, the governor of
Kyungsangbukdo said, "The twentieth century was marked with antagonism and
conflicts, but the world is standing at a new cultural crossroad in which
we are moving toward reconciliation and peace in the twenty-first
century." Today everybody discusses and stresses the importance of
'globalization' and 'New Millenium'. We believe that all our hopes will be
realized through this magic word 'globalization' in the 21st century. The
problem is that we don't see what we have to do and what we shouldn't do.
Generally in Korean society we just try to keep up on appearances without
any preparation or frame of mind.

Let me give some instances. Among the U.N. member nations Korea may be
the only country where a Chinatown cannot be formed. What is the meaning
of this strange phenomenon? Is this type of closed society suited for
'globalization? What about the Japanese discrimination policy against
Korean residents in Japan? Are we judging others by their real capacity or
by their origin? Why do many Korean young people prefer the large
enterprises rather than small steady companies? We have to do away with
these types of useless formalities and not just look at false reputations.

To really undergo 'globalization' and survive this stage of reforms, we
need to also reform our way of thinking. To face the challenges at the
dawn of a global era in the new millenium we have to know and understand
the other side of the world. The world is now looking for open-minded
peoplw with self-initiative. This is why young people have to turn their
eyes to the overseas job markets. This changing world doesn't need a frog
in the well that knows nothing of the great ocean. An experience like
interning overseas will be desirable preparation for the better future.

I'd like conclude by citing some requirements that many foreign companies
call for.
- To be creative and pro-active- To be flexible and willing to open one's
mind
- To have personal initiative- To understand the broad range of the world
family
- To be organized, independent and confident- To get along well with others
- To have the ability to be comfortable and effective in person
- To have excellent communication skills linguistically as well as
culturally
