Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov will focus on security issues in Northeast Asia during his visit to Pyongyang beginning Wednesday, the Voice of Russia said Monday.
The Russian broadcasting station reported in an editorial on Ivanov's trip to North Korea, Japan and Vietnam that he will meet North Korean leaders on the prospects of bilateral ties and the security situations on the Korean peninsula and surrounding areas.
``(Ivanov) will focus on discussing regional security issues because the bilateral relationship has become a major factor in maintaining stability in Northeast Asia,'' it said.
Russia, China and North Korea have already denounced the plan by the United States and Japan on the theater missile defense system (TMD). Ivanov and North Korean officials will likely discuss a joint strategy against the TMD.
Russia no longer needs to include a provision in the new friendship treaty with North Korea on automatic military involvement in case of war on the Korean peninsula, the report said. Russian foreign policy is to settle conflicts countries through dialogue.
Russian officials have said the new treaty, which Ivanov will sign while in Pyongyang, will not include the military involvement clause that served as the backbone of bilateral relations in the previous treaty. (Yonhap)
