A North Korean newspaper recently reported in detail about the Internet, reflecting the reclusive country's mounting interest in the world-wide computer network.

Minju Choson, the Cabinet organ, said on Jan. 21: "The Internet is a network that links computer networks in the world. Using the Internet you can enjoy many services like data exchange, chatting, discussions on specific subjects, and information searches."

The newspaper explained that a user's personal computer should first be connected to the net, adding, "If not, you must use a modem and phone line to connect."

It is unusual for Pyongyang's state-controlled media to carry articles about the Internet for their readers, especially ordinary citizens. One constant concern among North Korean officials has been finding ways to prevent its citizens from having any contact with the outside world.
"We believe the Internet has yet to enter North Korea. It will take a considerably long time for ordinary people to get on the Internet," an official at the Unification Ministry in Seoul said.

North Korea has been utilizing a self-developed intranet since 1996, but only to exchange e-mail and data.
