Leaders of various religious organizations will mark the 81st anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement with a ``Hand-in-Hand'' peace drive for reconciliation and peace on the Korean peninsula.
A total of 333 representatives from Buddhist, Protestant, Roman Catholic and other faiths will pledge to open a new century of reconciliation and peace and do away with the era of division and war on March 1.
On March 1, 1919, a group of 33 religious leaders rose up to call for independence from Japanese colonial rule, igniting the nationwide movement.
Organizers anticipate an estimated 1 million religious followers and the general public to participate in the drive in Seoul, Pusan and six other major cities.
In a declaration to be read by Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, religious leaders will also acknowledge that they are partly to blame for problems in the country.
