Some may ask, why I am still talking about unification after august?
I feel that the subject of unification is very important regardless of the time of year, so I have chosen to write this editorial accordingly. Every year when August rolls around, we talk about unification. This year was no exception.

The Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation made a 61 km-long chain of people holding hands from Seoul to the truce village of Panmunjom. Thousands of student activists held the Pan-People's rally on the Seoul National university campus. Other groups also held meetings and made statements about unification.
Especially, the members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), a
militant umbrella labor organization, played in the first soccer match between
laborers from the two Koreas since the division of the country five decades ago.
The Government used a double standard in these events. It actively helped some groups while it regarded the Pan-People's rally on the Seoul National University Campus as an illegal one on the grounds that it may put the city into disorder and give apprehension to the residents of the area and the passers-by. So the last August of the 20th Century passed by in confusion.
It is the sad fact that even discussions about what is right and logical are disappearing.
Especially, the young people of today dislike the idea of the unification of Korea. Their reasons are that unification will bring about too much confusion and pain.
There are so many reasons for the unification to take place, to bring together the forcibly separated families, and to grow into a stronger power in the world. To carry out the unification, the people must first find a common round. However, the reality is harsh. Unification has become a standard part of august. The media reports as if by rote that there is always a clash between the police and the students in August.
Unification cannot take place within such conditions. We must all work together for unification. Or else, the only unification we'll ever see will be on the television, or on a movie screen.
