The prosecution said yesterday that it was tracking down and questioning 275 Seoul subway unionists for their roles in an eight-day strike which ended Monday night.

The strike has been termed illegal because it disregarded regulations banning walkouts during a mandatory 15-day cooling-off period.

Forty unionists have been apprehended. Of them, seven have been formally arrested on charges of obstructing subway operations. The remaining 33 were booked without physical detention.

Prosecutors said they were tracking down the remaining unionists, 61 of whom are believed to be the union's leaders. Arrest warrants have been issued for the leaders.

The intensity of legal action against the union members will differ depending on their roles in the strike, the prosecutors said. However, those who played leading roles will be arrested without exception, they said.

Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corp. is expected to file lawsuits against the union leadership for losses incurred by the walkout.

Prosecutors said they will guarantee the holding of legal labor rallies planned for May Day, but warned that stern measures will be taken against illegal or violent demonstrations.
