Workers at brokerage firms will stage a general strike from May 31 to protest the government's decision to abolish lunch hour recess at the Korea Stock Exchange, the Korea Securities Trade Union said yesterday.
As announced, the exchange yesterday started trading during the lunch break between noon and 1:00 p.m.
The union had previously planned to begin the strike from yesterday, but delayed it to May 31 because of recent volatility in the stock market.
A union official said about 9,000 workers, including traders, at 15 securities houses are expected to join the strike. Union members will vote on the union leaders' decision to strike. The result of the vote will be available tomorrow.
