The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) submitted a petition to the National Assembly on June 5 asking it to pass a law instituting the 5-day workweek.

In the petition, the KCTU presented two proposals; a proposal for a revision of the Labor Standard Act to change the legal maximum workweek from 44 hours to 40 hours and a proposal for legislation of a special act to cut the workweek.

The KCTU demanded that the National Assembly form a committee composed of labor and management, that they limit the amount of overtime hours to 7 hours per week from the current 12 hours per week, and establish a support center for workweek shortening.

The KCTU released a press statement saying, "In 1999, Korea's GDP was $432 billion, the thirteenth largest in the world, and Korea's GNP per capita was $8,581, ranking thiry-seventh in the world. On the other hand, Korea's workweek was 47.9 hours, ranking last among OECD members. "
