Of the top 100 companies in the nation, 73 of them are using a 5-day system. For a corporate culture tha has upto know had a 6-day workweek, this is a trend that the nation's businesses are watching closely.

According to findings by 'New Management', a periodical specializing in business management found that among 100 top-ranked companies, three were using a full 5-day system, 66 were following a 5-day system twice a month and four were implementing the 5-day work system once a month. The remaining 27 companies showed no change, still implementing the previously standard 6-day workweek.

Companies using the 5-day system have been on the increase since 1996, which at that time saw only 50 companies using what was then considered revoluntionary. In 1999, this number rose toto 68 companies and then again an increase to 73 companies for the year 2000.

As to the motivation behind introducing a 5-day system, 55.9 percent replied that it provided more leisure time and a chance fo their employees to relax. Another 14.7 percent answered that it was to improve in general the quality of life of their employees, and 11.8 percent said it was for more efficient production and a reduction in payroll.

In addition to many of those polled calling for a more universal adoption of a full 5-day system, some also thought this should be extended to include the education system as well which also presently requires students to attend classes on Saturday.
