GENEVA (Yonhap) _ South Korea asked the International Labor Organization (ILO) Wednesday to revise the labor standard law it advises member countries to adopt so that the law may keep abreast of the changing labor environment, including employment diversification.

During a keynote speech delivered at the 88th ILO Congress, South Korea's Vice Labor Minister Kim Sang-nam said the socioeconomic environment in the 21st century would be basically different from that of the 20th century because of the globalization of trade and technical innovations in the information-telecommunications sector.

More efforts should be made to develop human resources in such a manner that workers will be able to adapt themselves to technological innovations in the information-telecommunications industry to contribute to the development of industrial technology, he added.

In the past two years, South Korea saw many developments in the labor movement, such as the forming of teacher unions, the labor market's rapid growth, increased labor-management-government dialogues and the introduction of a system guaranteeing a basic standard of living for the people, Kim said.
