President Kim Dae-jung's scheduled meeting with representatives from business, labor and the government was cancelled yesterday as the trade union representative refused to attend.
Lee Nam-soon, president of the Federation of Korea Trade Unions (FKTU), one of Korea's two labor organizations, informed Chong Wa Dae of his inability to attend the meeting.
Lee's failure to attend coincides with the escalating tension between bank unionists and the government. Unionists at major banks have threatened to go on strike to protest the government's planned consolidation of troubled banks under a holding company.
Chong Wa Dae spokesman Park Joon-young said the tripartite meeting will be held a few days later.
Park said he does not agree with the allegation made by bank unionists that the government still controls finance.
``Under the Kim Dae-jung administration, no attempt was made to jawbone banks to provide favored loans to specific companies,'' the spokesman said.
