The government yesterday approved a 16.6-percent hike in minimum wage per hour, which will be raised from the current 1,600 won to 1,865 won starting next month.
The increase marked the highest one since 1991, when the nation raised the hourly minimum wage by 18.8 percent.
With the approval, all workers will be granted a pay of at least 14,920 won in daily wages if they work eight hours a day.
But, representatives of employers strongly protested the new wage guideline, claiming that the steep hike will force businesses to shoulder more burdens.
