Suicide over stress at workplaces will be covered by insurance.
The Labor Ministry yesterday said that it has revised the regulations in order to expand the coverage of the insurance in industrial workplaces.
The ministry has so far refused to recognize suicide by workers caused by industrial accidents.
From now on, families of victims can get compensation for suicide at the workplace if they can prove that the victims committed suicide from job stress.
Eligible for the insurance are victims who received psychiatric treatment for stress-related disorders at the workplace before suicide.
In addition, if workers being treated commit suicide because of injuries suffe ed at workplaces, their family members will be compensated for the suicide.
Beneficiaries will have to submit medical diagnosis proving that the victims suffered from psychiatric problems caused by industrial accidents.
According to figures available, one or two bereaved families applied for compensation a year before the nation was hit by an unprecedented financial turmoil in late 1997.
But, the number rose to seven in 1998 and 11 in 1999 because more workers committed suicide due to aggravating job-related stress amid the economic turbulence.
