The strong implementation of government’s unilateral restructuring has produced tens of thousand of job losers. More than 100,000 workers would be laid off from 52 workout companies which have been recently announced. Since the introduction of labour flexibility, wages have been lower and working conditions worsening. Over 53 percent of working population are now catagorised as irregular work such as contingent, part-time, and dispatched work. Thus, the FKTU has struggled to solve the following matters: protection of irregular workers’ rights, strengthening of collective agreement effectiveness, reduction of weekly working hours from 44 to 40, and payment of full-time union officers’ salary. At the end of last year, the FKTU had fought against the government and management, calling on the implementation of the above-mentioned four tasks. However, nothing has been improved since then. Thus, the FKTU is taking the second round of action to meet the four requirements as well as against the government’s unilateral restructuring.
On this reason, the FKTU has planned to organise a “workers’ national conference to protect workers’ basic rights and against the government’s unilateral restructuring” in Yoido at 14:00 on November 14, 2000. At the conference, over 50,000 workers who will gather throughout the country will take part in the rally. With regard to the Conference, we are seeking your close attention and strong support, sending us a solidarity message. Your solidarity message would encourage the participants of the Conference and lead it to a success.
