Police in South Korea say they are ready to break up a strike involving15,000 bankworkers, as the government pledges to accelerate the pace of restructuring the country's financial sector.

Unions members of two major commercial banks - Kookmin and Housing & Commercial - have been on strike for three days in protest at the merger of the firms which they say will lead to redundancies.

Three-fourths of the banks' workers have barricaded themselves in a bank research institute to the north of Seoul, demanding that the merger be reversed.

The government has ruled the bank strike illegal and warned that all union leaders will be arrested.

The Korea Financial Industry Union says a bigger walkout involving more banks will be held on Thursday.

About 2,000 riot police have ringed the rally site while helicopters circle overhead broadcasting statements requesting workers to disperse voluntarily or face arrest.

In response the workers blocked the institute's main gate and other entrances with cars, vowing to continue to fight.
