Riot police in South Korea appear set to break up a strike by thousands of employees protesting against the planned merger of two major banks.
Around 3,000 riot police troops have surrounded the compound of the Kookmin Bank's education centre in a northern suburb of Seoul, where around 15-thousand bank employees are staging a sit-in.
The employees, of Kookmin Bank and Housing and Commercial Bank, are calling on the government to rescind the planned merger between the two, which they fear will lead to massive job cuts.
Police helicopters are hovering above the sit-in, urging the striking workers to return home or face arrest.
The Korea Financial Industry Union, which is organising the sit-in, has called for an all-out strike by all banks from Thursday.
