The Police breaks the Strike by Force on December 27

As the police cleared out cars parked in the road in front of the main entrance of the Kookminbank Education Centre yesterday, the striking workers could not help supposing that the police will take an action sometime tomorrow. As supposed, the police started pushing forward the striking workers at 08:30. In response to the attack of the police, the striking bank workers confronted with the police without leaving the struggling place for a while. Even though the confrontation between strikers and the police looked serious and dangerous, there was no serious accident except for one female worker wounded. In the end, the police arrested 7 union staff who have led the strike, but who were not key figures. Key figures have already escaped with safety by help of rank-and-file members from the arrest of the police. For the advance preparation of the police’s attack, around 500 workers, who are in charge of computer facilities, have already moved to FKTU Education Centre in Yoju one day earlier than the strategy of the police. The rank-and-file members and Deputy General Managers were asked to gather at Korea University, but they were unable to access to the University because of exit-and-entrance control by the police.

However, it is no longer believed that the workers come back to the office tomorrow. To pressurise the government, the FKTU plans to take stereo-typed action programmes like a sympathy strike on December 28 and a rally on December 29. It is a question how many workers at other non-fighting banks will take part in sympathy. And it is also a question how many workers in other industrial federations will take part in a rally at Seoul Station.

So far, there is no sincere dialogue with government officials. Rather, the opinions of the both sides – government and labour – are far differential. To narrow the differences of opinions, the both sides have to open dialogue mechanisms and rediscuss the issue of merger which was found some procedural problems thoroughly avoided the involvement of labour in the decision-making process
