Financial workers have gone on strike since December 21, 2000

Opposing to the P&A-type merger between Kookminbank and Housing & Commerce Bank to cause job losses, around 130,000 workers of the two Banks go on strike at Kookminbank Education Centre in Ilsan City, Seoul Metropolitan City. The workers call on the government to keep the agreed agenda between the government and trade unions on last July 11, which promised not to enforce P&A merger anymore.

The strikers who have gathered from branches of all the country since around 19:00 on December 21 have denied going back to work. At present time of 15:00 December 22, the two banks have been not normally operated due to shortage of labour force. According to Younhap News, only 3,665 persons out of total 9,763 employees of Kookminbank are on duty, but the remainders have joined gathering at the Kookminbank Education Centre. Even many of part-timers and contract workers are joining the strike. Almost all of union members of the two banks are now participating in gathering. Having continued overnight sit-in strike at the playground of the Kookminbank Education Centre, the strikers are now building tents, not only to protect them from cold and bad weather, but also to prepare for a long-run strike. At this moment, most cash machines, so-called ATM, has not been working appropriately causing many problems and inconvinences.
Last night, representatives of Finance and Banking Industry Trade Union supported by FKTU had an over-night negotiation with government officials. But the negotiation was broken without finding any solution on the issue of P&A merger between the two banks. At this moment, waiting for any positive proposal by the government, the FKTU is supporting the strike. FKTU staff, divided into three shift per day, also encourage and support the strikers.
