Immigration rejects, expelled on suspicion of entering Korea to work illegally, surged with the highest record, putting concerned authorities under emergency duty orders.
Kimpo Immigration Office unveiled on December 29 that entry rejects numbered 18,835. This figure indicates that it surged by 75.8% from 10,724 last year and is much more than in 1997, on the brink of going into IMF bail out.
The number of yearly entry rejects increased to 10,523 in 1997 from 9,758 in 1996 and sharply decreased to 1,642 in 1998 due to IMF effects but soared again last year owing to economic recovery. Entry rejectss by nationality are 7,985 Thais, 3,264 Pakistanis, 3,243 Bangladeshis, 585 Chinese and 170 Ghanans, respectively. The reason why the number of entry rejects soared is due to the fact that undocumented migrant workers increased. Undocumented stayers stand at 172,501 is August 2000, 37,163 more than last year. "Undocumented migrants aimed at illegal working through ways such as false report of an invitation surged due to economic recovery. So our burden of working for the crackdown increased highly", said an official at the Kimpo Immigration office. Yonhap 12/29
