KAGEWC President Cha Bong-Chun, arrested this morning

KAGEWC President Cha Bong-Chun was arrested on the way to work in this morning(Dec. 26th). All the members of the KAGEWC express thorough indignation at this suppression at this moment, when the KAGEWC has made an appeal to the National Assembly for legislation on government employees' union and has been preparing for union building on the 24th of March next year.
President Cha has already been under prosecution with no detention for the KAGEWC Inaugural Congress on March 24th and Changwon Rally on June 9th. Actually the detention warrant on President Cha was denied by the Court in September. Police has issued a subpoena to President Cha seven times with regard to the Boramae Park Rally, where the PSI General Secretary Hans Engelberts gave his solidarity speech to the KAGEWC, on November 4th.
The KAGEWC claimed it and unjust and anachronic suppression and refused the summons. So far four leaders of the KAGEWC such as President Cha Bong-Chun(7 times), General Secretary Ko Kwang-Shik(2 times), Chairperson of the Gyeongnam Association of GEWCs Kim Young-Kil(3 times), Chairperson of the Busan Association of GEWCs Lee Yong-Han(2 times) have been summoned in relation to the Nov. 4th Rally.
Seven leaders of the KAGEWC under prosecution with no detention are Cha Bong-Chun, Lee Yong-Han, Kim Young-Kil, Ko Kwang-Shik, Chairperson of the Seoul Association of GEWCs Kim Byeong-Jin, Vice President Noh Myoung-Woo and Seol Nam-Sool and other 3 leaders under investigation are Vice President Kim Sang-Keol, Han Seok-Woo and Kim Pan-Shik, as of Dec. 26th.
As we see, the only answer of the Government to our efforts for reform of public service community and restoration of basic labor rights of government employees has been suppression. Especially when the KAGEWC has been preparing for building of government employees' union on March 24th next year, this suppression is no other than to try to block up the demands of 900,000 government employees for restoration of basic labor rights.
The last 4 years of Kim Dae-Jung Government has seen no serious efforts nor substantial progress for restoration of basic labor rights of government employees, which was one of his commitments. Instead, this suppression has revealed that anti-labor is one of its real faces of the Government.
The KAGEWC will never step back. Our answer to the suppression is fighting back. Notwithstanding the suppression, we will build our independent and democratic union for reform of public service community and restoration of basic labor rights of government employees.
