[AWN 121] 2002, Step by Step with Migrant Workers

A year passed by that I begun with no fear. As a first stepped activist, I was getting worried about year 2002. I received a new year's card from Myanmar friend who was terribly injured that he lost 4 fingers while working in Korea. Because of the card, I got couraged and make my new year's resolution.

A year passed by that I begun with no fear. As a first stepped activist, I was getting worried about year 2002. I received a new year's card from Myanmar friend who was terribly injured that he lost 4 fingers while working in Korea. Because of the card, I got couraged and make my new year's resolution.

In Kwangju and Jeon-Nam, we are supposing that 5,000 to 7,000 migrant workers are working in the region. Among the numbers, industrial trainees are estimated to 1,200 and local corporate workers are 600. Compare to other region in Korea, Kwangju and Jeon-Nam has less migrant workers and we have not much vivid human activities for them.

Also citizen response biased and strange to migrant workers unlikely to other cities.
But our center would step ahead in year 2002 with hope. We would built community system within the center. Most of migrant workers are from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia. With their help, I expect they would be the center of new community. And the other thing we are working on is, to flourish medical aid business.
For last, there would be more voluntary activities for migrant workers.

I hope, year 2002 can be year of hope to every migrant workers that they no longer need to pay huge money to come to Korea, pick up job that fits to him/her, no more payment delay, safe working place, etc.
