Workers in 16 Countries Across the World Call for the Release of Imprisoned Workers in Korea

On January 22, 2002, in response to the joint call for international day of action for the release of imprisoned workers in Korea by the International Metalworkers Federation, the Korean Metal Workers Federation (KMWF), and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, unions in 15 countries are holding protest actions in front of Korean embassies or consulates.

The International Metalworkers Federation (IMF) has produced a poster for the campaign and set up a special cyber protest campaign at it website www.imfmetal.org to send electronic protest letters to President Kim Dae Jung, the head of the Korean government.

Where the action is taking place

South Africa: COSATU's metal industry union NUMSA will hold a special protest rally and between 500 to 1,000 metalworkers are expected to participate

India: protest rallies will be held in 8 state capitals and national capital (Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkota, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Banggalore, Chennai, Udaipur)

Philippines: the unions affiliated to the IMF, will deliver protest letters to the Korean embassy

Sri Lanka: IMF affiliate will deliver a protest letter at a meeting with the Korean embassy

Nepal: Nepal Factory Labour Congress will deliver a protest letter at a meeting with the Korean embassy

Bangladesh: IMF affiliate will visit the Korean embassy to deliver a protest letter.

Japan: IMF-JC delegation will meet with a representative of the Korean embassy to hand over the protest letter.

Australia: Public sector union, Community and Public Sector Union, is planning to join in the International Day of Action.

Sweden: SIF will deliver a protest letter to the Korean government.

Austria: Metalworkers Federation will deliver a protest letter to the Korean embassy

Switzerland: The leaders of the IMF at its Geneva headquarters will hold a protest meeting at Korean Mission before delivering a protest letter.

Russia: The miners and metallurgical workers union (GMPR) is planning an action where 1,300 people are expected to participate.

Bulgaria: National Federation of Metallurgy will visit the Korean embassy to meet with the Korean ambassador to deliver a protest letter.

Ukraine: 7 IMF affiliates will call on the Korean embassy to deliver a protest letter and then hold a press conference.

Italy: CGIL is planning to deliver a protest letter to the Korean government

Norway: Norwegian IMF affiliate, Fellesforbundet and the LO-Norway and its Oslo branch will hold a demonstration in front of the Korean embassy. Workers from a number of industrial unions and local branches are expected to participate in the action. Fellesforbundet president Kjell Bjorndalen is to meet with a representative of the Korean embassy to deliver a protest letter. The Norwegian union leaders have been informed by the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik that he will raise the issue of imprisonment of trade unionists during is official state visit to Korea from January 23 to 25.
The January 22 International Day of Action will add momentum to the campaign for the release of imprisoned trade unionists in Korea. The KCTU will prepare a complaint to the ILO for violation of freedom of association as indicated by the ICFTU in its most recent letter of protest to the Korean government. KCTU will appeal to concerned union organizations to associate themselves with the ILO complaint.

KCTU will also prepare a special petition at the World Social Forum being held from January 31 to February 5 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
