Press Release
1. The spotlight of the whole world will shine on Korea & Japan, during the upcoming 2002 FIFA World Cup. Hidden in the shadow of the spotlights glare, however, are many workers in the factories of Asia, who are forced to work in inhumane conditions. Companies such as Adidas, exploit countless numbers of children in Asia, through the production of footballs in sub-contracted sweatshop factories. While many Korean TNCs with branches abroad in Asia, deny and suppress the rights of workers, and exploit them under poor working conditions, and low wages.

2. We hope to inform Korea, and the world, of the harsh realities faced by: workers struggling to earn a fair wage in factories belonging to Korean TNCs abroad, and by children working in sweatshops producing sports wear & equipment for companies such as Adidas, and Nike. Through this campaign, we hope that the 2002 FIFA World Cup will live up to the spirit of fair-play, and equality, not only on the football pitches of Korea and Japan, but also in the factories of Asia!

Our demands

As participants of the "Joint Action against TNC World Cup Sponsors that Exploit Both Child and Adult Labour", demand the following to FIFA and other producers of sports goods, transnational companies that sponsor the World Cup Games and Korean companies abroad:

1. FIFA should demand that all their affiliate companies stop the use child labour in the production of sports goods. FIFA should investigate into the matter of child labour in relation to their partners, set-up a transparent monitoring system and make public the implementation process of the FIFA Code of Conduct. Should a World Cup sponsor be found guilty of using child labor and not respect and implement labour rights, FIFA should deny sponsorship rights to that company;

2. Transnational Corporations sponsoring the World Cup, along with the others, must secure living wages for adult workers and recognize their rights to organize and assemble to excercise their collective bargainning powers. We deplore at the fact that Nike, Adidas and other sports goods producers exploit and treat their suppliers and workers in an inhumane way. These sponsoring the 2002 World Cup, such as Coca-Cola and MacDonald's and are involved in the active violation of human and labour rights of men, women and children;

3. Finally, we demand that the Korean government educate Korean companies in foreign countries, and those who are planning to go abroad, on the basic human and labour rights of their workers. It must investigate human right violations and it must put in efforts to resolve any violations that have taken place. Korean industries investing abroad has been the target of criticism for practising militarist labour management in the 70's and 80's in Asia and Latin America. Korean companies abroad must respect their workers' basic human rights.
