Recent provision seizure finally drove a worker to die. On January 9th Bae Dal Ho, Doosan's steel worker (ex representative of the workers union, 50), burnt himself and died to protest the oppression and provision seizure.

He was arrested on July 23rd, 2002, because of the strike of April 7th, 2002, and he was suspended from working for 3 months since he got out of the prison. He returned to work on December 26th, but his monthly payroll and reality (his house) were put under provisional attachment, and he had suffered from the great financial and mental pressure.

In his note of last words which he left in his car, says "The provision seizure is so painful. Because of the last strike 18 people were dismissed, and over 90 people were punished. I don't feel like coming to work. I want every fired ones to reappointed." And also "Two days later, it will be the payment day. I did not get paid for about 6 months, and I won't get in again this time." Oppression of the company to the union and, provision seizure and compensation to the workers made this tragedy.

On June 24th, Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction insist that it had 15.4 billion won worth damages because of the strike, and claimed damages against the head of steel worker union and other executives of the union.
According to the statistics of Ministry of Labor, since the year of 2000 there were 53.5 billion worth damage claim in 58 companies and 107.7 billion worth provision seizures in 44 companies due to the damages caused from strikes, since October, 2001. Concerning this statistics, Korean Confederation of Trade Union says that, "Through the universal amount of claims and provision seizure, they are trying to demolish the three labor rights. When there is strike, they have to think how they could improve the working environment, not to calculate the damages because of the strike. It will only make the incident much longer."
