Where is our Freedom of Expression and Press?

Where is our Freedom of Expression and Press?

Young Hyun Song, head of the publishing company 'Sallimtuh,' which has published such North Korean works as 'Friend' and 'Red-Cheeked Myna,' was taken to the NIS (National Intelligence Security) on violation of the National Security Law (NSL). According to his wife, investigators from the NIS bureau arrested him at their house and confiscated his books including North Korean texts. Mrs. Song states that the investigators accused Mr. Song of publishing copious volumes of books that were deemed 'advantageous' to the enemy. According to Mrs. Song, the NIS stated that her husband will continue to publish these type of materials, so they will take him into custody. The government's actions have been contradictory; they move forward with NSL revisions, and at the same time oppresses people on the basis of the NSL. The fact that Mr. Song has been taken into custody for merely publishing, tells the public that the freedom of expression and press are not valued by the South Korean government. [Chang Jo Lee]
