The National Assembly Disapproves of a Gay Witness
Human Rights Groups Protest

Mr. Suck-Chun Hong, a gay actor, was scheduled to attend parliamentary inspection of the administration as a witness on November 3 and 7. However, some members of the Committee on Health and Welfare disapproved, saying that a gay's testimony disgraces the assembly. Last September, Mr. Hong made a public statement to being gay. Unfortunately, his public coming out only caused him to be fired by all networks.
Thirteen human rights groups, including 'Lesbian and Gay Human Rights Federation,' 'Lawyers for a Democratic Society,' and 'The Sarangbang' held a press conference on November 8 regarding this incident. They criticized the assembly of neglecting the duty to protect minority rights. The human rights organizations also sent an inquiry to the committee and requested the assembly to denounce unfair prejudice and make every effort of protecting minority rights.
