Demanding Imprisonment for 5 years and Disqualification for 5 years
The final public trial of Mr Suh Jun Sik, the representative of Sa-Rang-Bang Human Rights Group (Sarangbang), was held at room 407 of the west branch, Seoul District Court at 4 p.m. on June 15th. In the trial, The prosecutor demanded a penalty as imprisonment for 5 years and disqualification for 5 years. Against this sentence, lawyer Cho Kwang Hee revealed for Mr Suh, "¡¸Red Hunt¡¹'s suspicion as the benefit for the enemy was already taken off in other trials before. Moreover, ¡¸True Beginning¡¹can be lent from any libraries in Korea and be bought by any bookstores". He also pleaded Mr Suh's innocence for the violation of private domicile. "Mr Suh never acted home-breaking with intention, rather the suppression of the police against the Human Rights Film Festival gave the Hongik University no choice but to request Mr Suh to leave the campus".
In the final statement, Mr Suh Jun Sik asked, "I hope the court and judge would make the decision with the desire for the beautiful society respecting the human rights, not avoiding the core issues of this trial". The trial for the verdict on him will be held on July 6th.
He has held this trail for one and a half years under the suspicion 'hosting the second Human Rights Film Festival in 1997'. Meanwhile the prosecution withdrew a part of charge against him concerned with 'the law about the records and videotapes (the pre-censorship)' and 'the law about the restriction of collecting donations'. It is resulted from the recent decision that those laws violate the constitution.
