Provided wiht food over Circulation Period
Prisoners was provided with laver which had been over the normal period of circulation. They were angry enough to refuse eating. "On June 28th, we were given sheets of laver and the circulation period of them was until July 30th in 1998", said an inmate in Kyungju Prison. "Although the prisoners protested and denied to eat the laver, the prison officers distributed the same laver again" also said he, "It means that the prison officers regard us as a landfill where the rotten food is deserted".
The inmates in Kyoungju Prison contended that corruption and dereliction of prison officers brought about the terrible event in that they were in collusion with the producers of the laver and did not examine the laver sufficiently. The prisoners also demanded disciplinary punishment of the related officers, substitution of laver providers, and official apologize.
Goh Sang Nam, a director in the Citizen's Solidarity for Human Rights, said, "It was wrong for the authorities of Kyungju Prison not to deal with the problem seriously as soon as it happened first" He added that the officers responsible for the case should be punished immediately.
Meanwhile, it is another problem that noxious gas permeates into wards of Kyoungju Prison because plastic bowls and bottles are burnt in a trash burner located near prisoners' residences. The prisoners demanded to separate garbage collection in order to block penetrating the noxious gas and the officers promised to accept it two months ago. However, the gas penetration is still a serious problem; therefore the trash burner should be dislodged from the living place of the prisoners.
