Campaigns Held to Root out Police Violence

"Root out police violence through the power of citizens!"

Campaigns to root out endless police violence are to be held throughout the month of October.
"Citizens for Human Rights" and "College Students for Human Rights" began their campaigns to end police violence on October 1st, starting with the protests held in front of the police station and the public discussions.

There are several reasons. Not only have the illegal questionings by the police of the people on the streets and around the schools continued this year, but cases of sexual harassment occurred while police repressed demonstrations of the labor union of Hyundai Heavy Machine Industry and also in the Choi-chon village. In addition, the police have abused their guns when arresting suspects.

"The police confronts people at the foremost front and is to be feared as a force that abuses human rights," said Sang-man Ko (aged 30), the chief consultant of "Citizens for Human Rights." "I hope the October campaign helps reform the Korean police into a friendly force that uses power in a democratic way to protect human rights," Ko added.

On the 1st of October, the citizens group and the students group declared the start of the campaign in front of the police station in Suhdaemoon and held a performance. The groups plan to gather reports of abuse by the police 24 hours a day while the campaign lasts and then to formally sue the police and to hold protests.

In addition, the citizens group also plans to hold campaigns to root out violence in the prisons and inside the Prosecutors Office. (Questions regarding the campaigns should be made to 02-749-9004)
