A day in October in a cold winter, several steps were continuing towards
Dong-kuk University. They had been continued during even weekends when
most students were not in school. Though the cold weather, all entered
with twinkling eyes. They went to the Cultural Center in Dong-kuk
University where the 4th Seoul Human Rights Film Festival was being held.

Seoul Human Rights Film Festival(SHURIFF) has the fourth order in this
year. It is one of the film festivals that is held by only a sponsor's
funds, for the purpose of showing no-cut films. It was not easy to
hold SHURIFF until the fourth one. After the first SHURIFF in 1996, during
preparation of the second, police combats forcibly prohibited it, and took
the representative of festival. However, with the members will wanting
SHURIFF to be held peacefully and encouragement of people, SHURIFF could
be held well until the fourth one.

The opening film was 'All power to the people'. This film was about Mumia
Abu Jamal who was an activist for Negro's rights in USA. He is being
suspected for murder now, and in a state of being withheld from the lynch
law. During the film festival, the campaign for Murnia was progressing to
write postcards calling for his release. These postcards would be sent to
the American Embassy.

44 films were screened during the fourth SHURIFF. Spectators had the
chance to talk with directors of each films. There were many good
conversation with those who were concerned not only with human rights, but
also short films themselves.

Many Korean Short films about human rights were also shown during this
film festival. From the famous film 'Red Hunt 2', to 'Mindullae' and 'The
Sound', spectators could see various Korean films. They were so impressed
with live documentary and hero or heroin's frank speaking. They cried and
were tortured by the film's heros.

Besides film screening everyday, a few events also progressed
simultaneously. 'Meeting with activists for human rights' was held in Nov.
28th. Five activists working for rights of feminine, foreign workers in
Korea, refugees, handicapped person and etc. participated in that forum.
They explained the situation of each activity for human rights, and talked
with participants. 'A special department of people activity for Anti-WTO
New Round' progressed against WTO New Round held in Seattle in Nov. 30th.

How much time do we take to think about human rights in every day life?
Through the films about human rights, people can feel a new importance and
significance about human rights. And then, it is need to practice these
cares, respects, and concerns about others. This is what the Seoul Human
Rights Film Festival want to convey to the public.
