A special phone number will be set up next month to enable people to report cyber terrorism.

Following a meeting convened yesterday by Prime Minister Park Tae-joon and attended by nine ministers from relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Information and Communication, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, and the Ministry of Defense, the government said a special number dedicated to reporting cyber terrorism will be established next month.

A cyber counter-terrorism taskforce will be in operation by April to combat the rising tide of crimes committed in cyber space, such as hacking and spreading computer viruses, according to the ministry.

Although the government already has plans to introduce legislation for the protection of information and telecommunications (IT) infrastructure later in the year, the National Intelligence Service is to be allowed to execute security measures for the public sector under an executive order.

As for the private sector, the MIC will recommend measures to protect IT systems that have the potential to breach national security and disrupt the economy by June.
